Changed Climate on Warming

WASHINGTON — Rep. John Dingell once dismissed global warming as a “theory.” Lately, the Democratic lawmaker from Michigan has had a change of heart. “The science on this question,” he said recently, “has been settled.”

In a demonstration of his seriousness on the issue, Mr. Dingell recently circulated a letter to more than 20 major trade associations, pressing them for answers on issues raised by “the potential enactment of a cap-and-trade policy.” Among other things, Mr. Dingell wanted to know which sectors of the economy should be covered and whether there should be a “safety valve” giving companies extra time to meet mandated emissions reductions.

Companies to pilot giant ‘carbon-capture’ power plant

Alstom, the turbine manufacturer, and American Electric Power, the US energy supplier, are to build one of the world’s largest trials of “carbon-capture” technology that they hope will cut carbon emissions from coal- and gas-fired power stations.

The two companies said yesterday that they would start with a pilot project to capture emissions of carbon dioxide from AEP’s 1,300MW coal-fired Mountaineer plant in West Virginia. Alstom said the project would be ready at the end of 2008 and run for 12-18 months.

If the Mountaineer pilot is successful at preventing up to 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year from entering the atmosphere, Alstom and AEP will build a bigger, commercial-scale carbon capture plant at the Northeastern plant in Oklahoma. Alstom said its technology, which uses chilled ammonia to absorb CO2, should be able to capture carbon from 200MW of Northeastern’s 450MW capacity and be ready in 2011.

Is the Sky Really Falling? : impeding CO2 crisis

Patrick J. Michaels points out the flaws on the retreating polar ice caps,
increasing intensity of hurricanes and mass animal extinctions that reveal a
great deal of distortion and/or incompetence on the part of the alarmists.
For example, in the case of Antarctica he explains how a warming of the
oceans predicted by the global warming alarmists would actually increase the
density of the on land ice depths because it would create more snowfall over
Antarctica, which is just the opposite of what the alarmists claim is not
happening and cite as evidence that global warming is having impacts
already. On Greenland, temperatures were warmer for several decades earlier
in the 20th century than they were recently. For those with an interest, I
suggest reading the entire study.

Business faces fast-track carbon rules

By Ben Hall, Political Correspondent

Published: March 14 2007 02:00 | Last updated: March 14 2007 02:00

Business faces fast-track -regulations and new curbs on emissions under the government’s climate-change bill published on Tuesday.

The bill sets out far-reaching powers enabling ministers to rush in new rules or to set up or extend “cap and trade” mechanisms to more sectors of the economy.

Domestic heating oil could be one of the first products to carry a higher price for its carbon under an extended emissions trading mechanism as ministers seek to phase out the dirtiest technologies. Details will emerge in the government’s energy review, expected in May.

The bill would make Britain the first country to commit to legally binding targets for medium- and long-term cuts in carbon emissions.

GE moves into alternatives and renewables : The fact is that capitalism and entrepreneurialism will solve these societal problems.”

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–Rising energy demand worldwide and environmental concerns have made investments in energy technologies the most compelling in decades, General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt says. Financial stake in renewable energy
GE’s revenue from renewable energy–wind, solar and biomass–will be $7 billion in 2007. Five years ago, when it began ramping up investments, revenue was $5 million. Research and development dedicated to energy overall is about $2.5 billion per year.

The role of nuclear power in Europe received an unexpected boost yesterday as EU leaders hailed a landmark climate change deal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and switch to renewable fuels.

EU leaders pledged to ensure that 20 per cent of Europe’s energy will come from renewable sources by 2020.

Environmentalism is a religion! finally someone has said it

WASHINGTON, March 9 (UPI) — Environmentalism is a religion that is based more on political ambitions than science, the president of the Czech Republic warned Friday.
Speaking at the Cato Institute, a public policy think-tank, President Vaclav Klaus said that environmentalists who clamor for policy change to combat global warming “only pretend” to be promoting environmental protection, and are actually being driven by a political agenda.
“Environmentalism should belong in the social sciences,” much like the idea of communism or other “-isms” such as feminism, Klaus said, adding that “environmentalism is a religion” that seeks to reorganize the world order as well as social behavior and value systems worldwide.

As for government spending on global warming studies, the former finance minister and of the Eastern European nation and trained economist said that such efforts were a “waste of money,” adding that there was already sufficient scientific evidence for those seeking policy change to back up their proposals.

Meanwhile, he pointed out that those seeking to protect the environment could do a great deal under the existing political framework and with existing technologies, such as importing less goods from far-flung regions that require enormous jet fuel use.

Klaus concluded Friday his week-long tour of the United States, having met with a number of senior Bush administration officials, including Vice President Dick Cheney.

Investors will have to learn to adapt their asset allocation as climate change takes hold, a senior investment strategist has warned. Credit Suisse’s Philipp Vorndran was quoted in a special report from the firm which looked at the impact climate change could have on investors. In it, Vorndran predicts that companies will be liable for their contribution to global warming, affecting individual equities and bonds. He also warns that the relative attractiveness of real estate will change with the climate; that infrastructure rebuilding will hit government bonds and that “whole regions will suffer drastic changes to their attractiveness as a business location”.
